MAY 2009 | BIRMINGHAM INTERMODAL FREIGHT TERMINAL GETS W10 (9’6”) CLEARANCE

The Roadways Container Logistics rail terminal at Birch Coppice, Birmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal (BIFT) opened in July 2006. At 27 acres this purpose built facility in the heart of the Midlands incorporates an interchange between rail and road transport enabling inbound containerised traffic to travel from the UK ports to the midlands via the greener more environmentally friendly rail networks, before delivering locally through the use of Roadways dedicated vehicle resources. The BIFT facility has the capacity to hold 3,000 containers and utilises modern state of the art equipment to lift up to 25 containers per hour using one of the two large Kone Cranes.

Through the development, collaboration and financing of over £2.4m Network Rail, Advantage West midlands and Roadways Container Logistics, have come together to complete works on two bridges in May 2009 to W10 (9’6” High Cube) cleared specifications to allow large containers to arrive from the UK ports of Felixstowe and Tilbury.

BIFT now receives 7 Freight Trains daily from the UK ports of Felixstowe, Southampton, Tilbury and Thamesport from rail operators DB Schenker Rail, Freightliner and GBRf.
